A colleague of mine came close to contracting Hepatitis C. The scenario gives one pause. Having a referral coming from her trusted physician, the woman went into the Las Vegas Medical Center in the neon city weakened as well as sick to her stomach. Following drugging her and trying to complete the dreaded colonoscopy, the woman was rejected and asked to return in 2 days.
2 days later she went back and had the colonoscopy. Not a full week later the woman saw in the local paper that the Medical Center was in fact shut down by the state for unsafe activities. A cluster of occurrences of Hepatitis C had been identified in men and women who had colonoscopies on the same exact day at the same hospital where my friend had her two procedures. Thank goodness, my good friend determined later that they'd cleaned up their act at the Medical Center just before her two procedures.
50 thousand residents of Las Vegas got examined for Hepatitis C during a two month time period; this was an unprecedented domestic community health event. For many not treated in time, Hepatitis C can easily produce serious illness and perhaps fatalities.
In a bizarre way, this has been a strong community-building event. To begin with, the clinic she went to get a script for getting her blood taken did not charge her co-pay. The doctor declared that was the very least he could do. 2nd, when she went to the laboratory to have the blood drawn, an odd camaraderie developed. She sat adjacent to two motorcycle bikers-black leather and body art, flames creeping up their arms, chains around their necks. The husband and wife team sat nervously wringing their hands. On her other side sat a well-groomed elderly gentleman in bow tie and jacket grasping a bible. He shared he had been a local reverend. Also in the room was the expanded family group of a Hispanic grandmother. The family unit sitting nervously providing Grandma moral support. Reading eye glasses suspended round her neck.
After the doorway in the lab opened up, in strolled 3 suited individuals in business clothing: bright white shirts and solid, basic mens neck ties. These types of ties usually have the appearance of men's retro ties. The patterns are generally common: dependable colors or basic geometric motifs.
And round my good friend's throat? Her educational system ID. As a substitute teacher for the local school system she is expected to show an ID around her neck.
When you examine style articles and reviews on men's designer and men's slim neck ties which are so popular today, they consistently declare that your mens tie shows who you are. It clearly appeared legitimate for the businessmen. They had been all too easy to identify. The minister's bow tie was a revelation. Hardly any gentlemen wear bow ties in Sin City. A beloved friend who is a doctor wears one. He is a live wire, the life of the party. Somehow it was not easy to picture the minister as the life of the party at his place of worship. But who knows. Plainly it was not really his finest hour.
In addition to the chance of tainted blood, each one sitting down in that laboratory waiting room disclosed something private by the objects they wore around their necks. The group seated in the testing center waiting room became a small local community drawn together under very painful circumstances, quite a cross-section of modern society.
